I’ve been laying on the floor of my studio for forty minutes or so listening to The Doors and then some old school jazz.
Sometimes you just need to re-fuel. Sometimes you need to tune in to tune out. Sometimes you just need a boost.
Do you meditate? I don’t. Not in the traditional sense of the word. I don’t assume an anciently prescribed position and focus on my third and inner eye but I do let my mind go to quiet places and slow down until I feel clear and calm and refreshed. It doesn’t require silence, or the sounds of a babbling brook, or a $50 yoga mat, but it does require concentration. More than that, it requires abandon and a willingness to just press pause on whatever else is happening.
It’s easy to get pulled into the swirling misery of others, or to get freaked out by how much we have to do and who or what we feel we should be – and it happens to everyone – but if you can just give yourself a break and step away for even a few minutes a day, chances are you’ll do better, feel better, think better, sleep better. Don’t let yourself get addicted to stress, and if you find yourself motivated by the things that make you manic instead of the things that make you happy, stop and permit yourself even 5 minutes to take a walk, have some water, stretch, take some deep breaths, talk to a friend, water your plants, dance, whatever you need. Be good to yourself today, even if it’s only for that 5 minutes. Aren’t you worth that much?
