The weather has taken a turn for the worse – rather cold and snowy but with beautiful, bright skies, so I suppose I can’t complain. When it gets like this, when winter really starts to settles in, I find that I am drawn to warming drinks. I almost always have a coffee in my hand, and tea is my usual midday or early evening go-to beverage. But if things are more celebratory, or more dire, it can be nice to imbibe the warming spirit of, well, spirits. I’m not a big drinker, so when I have a drink I like it to be just as I want it, and that almost always means extra garnishes. I like extra olives in my Martini, at least 2 dilly beans in my Caesars and double cherries in my Old Fashioned. In fact, I like to mix up an Extra Cherry Old Fashioned with the syrup from our Bourbon Cocktail Cherries so that that festive cherry flavour is all the way throughout the drink. It’s sweet and smoky and good for what ails you as the cold creeps in.
Extra Cherry Old Fashioned
2 tsp simple syrup or syrup from our Bourbon Cocktail Cherries
3-4 dashes of aromatic bitters
3-4 dashes of orange bitters
1.5 oz your favourite bourbon
Stir well. Add an ice cube and 2 Bourbon Cocktail Cherries.
Twist a slice of orange zest over the surface of the drink before dropping it in.
Serve immediately. Makes 1 cocktail.
